Mephris Rules and Regulations

SECTION 1: GENERAL DEFINITIONS
1.A. “Mephris” [1] is defined as a game played by two teams of windboarders with a round ball connected by a thin ribbon of material for catching and throwing. The object of the game is to score by throwing a ball inside the goal while windboarding.
1.B. “Windboarder”[2] is defined as a person who rides on the water using windboard.
1.C. “Windboard” (or “Mephris board”) is defined as a board with a small mast, boom, and sail attached for propulsion. In addition, a Mephris board has a regulation sized “pouch” on the back of boom.
1.D. “Ball” is defined as a .4 kubits diameter red sphere with a 1 kubit[3] ribbon hanging from it.
1.E. “Pouch” is defined as a netted bag on a Mephris board attached to the rear of the boom possessing a .6 diameter opening and a .4 kubit deep with .05 kubit marginal sag.
1.F. “Steal” is defined as removing the ball from an opponent’s pouch by grabbing the ribbon.

SECTION 2: POSITION DEFINITIONS
2.A. “Shooter” is defined as an offensive windboarding position in the forward portion of the lake advancing towards the opponent goal dock in search of a goal shot.
2.B. “Blocker” is defined as a defensive windboarding position in the back portion of the lake blocking opponent movement in search of a “steal.”
2.C. “Flex” is defined as a flexible windboarding position, taking both an offensive role when the team is in possession of the ball and taking a defensive role when the opponent is in possession of the ball.
2.D. “Catcher” is defined as a defensive non-windboarding position on the goal dock, a last line of defense against the incoming shooter.

SECTION 3: POSSESSION RESTRICTIONS
3.A. Windboarder with possession of the ball must place ball in pouch within 3 seconds or within that time pass to another player.
3.B. Windboarder may not guard pouch with his hand, body, or any other means, though he may move the sail in any position he wishes to avoid capture.
3.C. Ribbon must hang outside the pouch no less than .5 kubits. Failure to place ribbon outside the pouch at regulation distance may result in a turnover.
3.D. If the windboarder falls when in possession of the ball, then the ball is “free” and available to any players. The fallen windboarder may not throw, touch, or guard the ball. Failure to do so will result in a turnover penalty.
3.E. If a clear safe path to a free ball is blocked by windboarders, then a floating marker with the ball in the center shall be left at the location.  A single windboarder from each team will sail for the ball at a 10 span distance when the clock resumes. Collision with the one possessing the ball results in a turnover.  All opposing players shall pursue their courses and the clock resume, when the windboarder becomes in possession of the ball

SECTION 4: CONTACT RESTRICTIONS
4.A. Windboarders must never obtain contact with another player or their board. Doing so may result in a turnover or further penalties. For every penalty, there is an added 2 span distance between the player with the ball and all opponents.
4.B. If a collision should occur and fault is determined, a floating marker with the ball in the center shall be left at the collision point. The windboarder not at fault shall have a 2 span distance from all opposing players and the clock shall resume when the windboarder becomes in possession of the ball

SECTION 5: LAKE POSITIONING
5.A. Goal Docks will be constructed of allonak wood or of similar substance, with either anchored or mechanized fixings to prevent movement lateral or horizontal movement. The goal dock shall possess a dimension of 12 kubits wide by 12 kubit deep.
5.B. The net shall possess a dimension of 6 kubits high by 8 kubit wide with a depth of 3 kubits; it shall be placed 1 kubit away from the back of the dock.
5.C. Each dock will be parallel at a distance of 60 spans[4] apart and adjust pre-game to be made perpendicular to the wind allowing for free movement from both sides. Either mechanized gears or hand powered movement of docks is acceptable. If the angle of wind during gameplay changes more than 45 degrees, then the docks must be adjusted.

[1] Translater’s Note: This game is best described in our language as a combination of windsurfing and soccer.
[2] Translater’s Note: Windboarding seems to be synonymous with windsurfing.
[3] 1 kubit (kub) = 1 foot
[4] 1 span = 5 kubits
